Which means the Chinese maritime scrap pirates will have it chopped up soon.
I've gone back and forth on this for a while now. My introduction to naval history was Bob Ballard and his findings of the Titanic and the Bismarck, and for a very long time I felt as though it was important that the wrecks were found so that they could continue to teach history to the future generations and serve as markers for those who have been lost at sea. Now, I'm not so certain that it is for best. Perhaps its better if they are simply left to rest in peace on the seabed, and we can always remember their loss by simply knowing that they are now guarded by the ocean.
I still don't know how I feel about it. Seeing the conditions of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse certainly makes me apprehensive to any discovery now.
I feel the same as Nagato. I grew up on Ballard. I am not worried about vessels like these that are found in extreme deep water. The team who finds the wreck keeps the exact location secret.
What worries me is that Ballard has to raise money and produce books and documentaries and other research materials to fund his expeditions. Petrel's crew does not. They go from place to place finding all the good wrecks and moving on with virtually no time on site or content produced. Now oceanographers and archaeologists don't have any big famous ships left to get funding to go find. Subsequent expeditions can't get money to be the second group to find Hornet or Indianapolis or Juneau so we don't actually get any research out of it.
That’s a great point, that was something I always felt that made guys like Ballard special because he seemed to care. That’s not to say these guys don’t care, but it feels like it’s always only just a brief article, 4-5 pictures, and that’s it.
When I heard about all the Java Sea wrecks were gone, I was pretty upset about it. There is probably a lot WW2 wrecks not yet discovered that have been illegally salvaged.
I know that pre-radiation metal is pretty valuable for medical equipment. But the steel is all rusted, dangerous and full of organic growth. Wouldn't it be considered worthless?
Someone with more knowledge on this stuff enlighten me?
