I’m surprised that I haven’t seen a US FO on here yet. Unless I’ve missed it! Anyone ever make one? The rangers are kinda ridiculous and they’re the only canon Spotter that isn’t a vehicle.
I use Rangers when the US has no planes. If the US is using planes, I just use either the Russian Forward Observer or if I am defending, the UK Forward Observer is good, just protect him & try to not move him. The F O jeep is just too fragile really. Just my. 02 cents worth but it works for me...
I don’t know how a Jeep can be in sight of the enemy and not get blown to bits.
The Jeep has speed 5 with a road bonus of 1 hex but no High Gear, so it has a speed of six if a road is utilized. If you play it correctly it only has to survive 1 turn to be worth the mear 6 points to be effective. If you have enough indirect fire units the jeep can drive to a location quickly (in the movement) and set up an observation post and level, MG teams, ATGs, Ammo dumps and etc. Wheather you destroy the units or they retreat to hide you can use this can open the way for your armor and infantry get into positions for attack.
When you go home, tell them of us and say, For your tomorrows these gave their today. ~J.M. Edmonds
I usually just house rule it and give the Red Devil Captain the ability to act as a spotter and add a few points to the cost of the unit. It's historical, given the availability of radios throughout US forces in the war. I think makes more sense for an officer to have the ability to call in artillery strikes anyway rather than giving Rangers (already a bit of a broken overpowered 5/5 unit) another strong ability.
