I couldn't find a thread talking about this plane. The Z.511 is in the newest release. It is a patrol bomber with 8 bombs and a very nice three torpedo SA. We encountered this plane for the first time last night in a 1942 game. The plane also has defensive armament so it can hold its own against at least early war fighters. One of our astute players actually read the SAs and saw a great opportunity and got three of them going into a dusk soon-to-be-night scenario. Because of the coming darkness, both sides limited fighter cover. The thing that got the group's attention is that the Z.511 has a loiter SA. We do have other aircraft that can use 3 torpedos in a turn but we have never dealt with one that could use three torpedos and had loiter. It was a bit controversial and needless to say, our British associates were not pleased (especially since there had been a limit on the number of Sutherlands) and called foul. Controlled by a player with a player with a reputation of rolling 6s, three torpedos and loiter are a very nasty combination. A British cruiser or battleship was either crippled or sunk each turn.
I am wondering, is that too much capability. Now the Z.511 isn't especially high armored so it is susceptible to ship antiaircraft. However, it seems that the three torpedo capability should have been somewhat limited. Either the plane should not have had loiter or that if it uses loiter, it can't use the torpedo capability. Or perhaps it should have had a once a game capability of using three torpedos. Just looking for some thoughts on the card now that it is in the pool. Maybe a house rule for only one unit per game (technically, there were only two aircraft flown of this design and neither were in combat operations)? Or are we being overly sensitive about the power of this unit? Fortunately, I was on the Italian side so I was not at the receiving end.
I am sure there are a few of you, whom like us, had not paid attention to the card and are at this very moment scrambling to see how you can apply this monster to your next battle.
