That merchant ship appears to be a 1/700 waterline scale. I just picked up some to work on. All those little ones, no idea. I think/hope that these are just proxies for testing rules, and that they use a smaller scale for the final game. This appears to be early in development.
Supposed to be an coastal seas game. Fast attack boats. 1/300 scale. I was just asking recently about doing small boat actions. Apparently, the Med was a hotbed of fast attack action.

Not sure what is up with scales. GW started this trend, moving from 28mm to 34mm. Joan of Arc has a dragon with a 2 foot wingspan. Seems that kids nowadays are demanding bigger and bigger 'miniatures'. Me? Give me true minis, 1/1800 was a GREAT scale for WAR, allowed skirmishes up to true battles. Cheaper, easier to store, and plenty of detail for grognards.

For WAS, I'd agree. For AAAF, I really like the 1/100 scale aircraft. When it comes to dogfighting, so much of the action ends up at the centre of the playing surface that having aircraft at a smaller scale, such as Wings of Glory or CY6, seems like a waste of space. For fleet-hunting, you need a larger space. WAS is the right scale, I would say.

Info Update: CS is a 1/300 scale focusing on small ship (PT Boat) actions. A Vospers is about 3" long, and S=Boat a bit over 4/ There are also armed Trawlers, Minesweepers, landing craft, and planes. A fleet box usually has 4 PT, 2 or 3 bigger ships, and 1 plane. Release date is 12/8. They indicated that destroyers are at the top end, running almost a ft long. Initial fleets are provided for the USA, British, Germans, Russians, and Italians. The starter runs I think 80 MSRP, and has 6 Vospers, 4 SBoats (2 early and 2 late model) and a bunch of tokens and templates. MM has it for 64.
Will be interesting to see if this catches on, on Facebook some gamers are quite upset about what they are calling 10 pages of errata shortly after release and the scale being too big.
I have played it and it seems to be pretty decent. I will have to see what the errata say. Scale wise, the bigger ships might be a little big, but it's not too bad...
It's OK if you're willing to accept that large freighters are more manoeuvrable than a MTBs and can comb torpedo tracks relatively easily. The randomised Star Wars Armada style activation system is a bit gamey which can suffer from the same "LAST/FIRST" issues. The scale is quite large and even on a large table the combat is quite cramped and I would like to see more space to be able to use of the MTB's speed to flank and "Boom & Zoom" and not "fly" off the table. I would place this game in the War Hammer, Star Wars Armada, Fallout Wasteland Warfare categories than a war-game with more realistic mechanics.
The videos on YouTube state that this game has been in development for several years and yet to have an errata released just two weeks after release implies that it was poorly play tested and rushed out for Xmas.
I'm still on the fence about this game. I'll let it run a bit longer before I decide to invest in it.
I would be interested to hear how either Coastal Patrol or Cruel Seas plays with 1/1800 WAS miniatures. A lot of potential in that scale I would think in terms of playing area size and ability to incorporate true 'coastal' actions in river mouths, estuaries etc
Some of the grognard complaints I have seen on FB (naval wargaming group) are kind of similar to complaints WAS faced from the same crowd to some degree (scale, company for profit, gamey at expense of realism is some areas, point system etc)
While I am sure there is valid complaints I don't personally play it so I am noticing the disdain for the beer and pretzel gaming more eye catching it seems counter intuitive.
