I was considering since I now have a friend who can paint miniatures quite excellently replacing a good portion of my miniatures with Shapeways ones, namely Japanese battleships, but other units as I see fit. Does anyone have much experience with this?
Two members of our group that regularly game have replaced nearly all the WaS ships with Shapeways. Chuck and Fred have even acquired all the sister ships and has everyone painted in WWII camo... Excellent looking fleets!!!

I think oscsusnet has combined two of us. One of us has nearly replaced his entire Shapeways fleet and the other, while a bit farther behind in that regard, has painted most everything in cameo (a real pain with DDs too). Both of us have a lot of sister ships. I'd post some of the cameo ships if I could figure out how in this era where we lost most of our original photo hosting sites.

Combined, you mean painted in a cameo pattern. See you tomorrow night!!!

I paint Shapeway's mostly for the Forumini cards. My local players (and I) much prefer to have minis we don't have than spending time painting minis we already have from WotC. That doesn't mean I would never paint Shapeways versions of miniatures we already have from WotC. But they are a bottom priority. At the rate I am currently painting I will get to the WotC miniatures in about two more lives.

I buy miniatures if it is a new Forumini card released in 'x' deck. For example: Jacob Van Heemskerck card, pull up Shapeways, place an order for the mini, pay and wait. I'm replacing some of my WOTC versions with Shapeways but that isn't a priority right now.
I use to have bretwhite do it but he retired from it to spend more time with family. Now tigerman77 does all my painting

Its a big ask, especially if your including sister ships as well, other cards etc. The time length for good painting standards and overall costs would be mind boggling for a big collection.
I would say just replace poor size/cast originals, Kongo's, Myoko's, Tone's, Montana etc.

But then the perfectionist in me comes out. Both my Fuso’s are inaccurate, Yamashiro horribly so. Even Nagato lacks its characteristic torpedo bulges. The Yamato’s are our of proportion in many places.

I've debated to myself whether to get a Fuso Shapeways mini or not. the WOTC looks alright
